British Values and Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development

What is SMSC?

Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural (SMSC) development is a key aspect of education in our school, embedded throughout the curriculum and school life rather than taught as a standalone subject. SMSC is interwoven into lessons, behaviour expectations, and the overall ethos of the school.

Each subject incorporates planned SMSC links, which can be found on individual subject pages. This development is further nurtured through our collective worship, behaviour policies, and the attitudes we cultivate within the school community. We believe that fostering the personal development of children in these areas plays a vital role in their learning, achievement, and overall growth.

Our aim is to provide an education that empowers children to:

  • Explore and reflect on their own values and beliefs
  • Develop spiritual awareness
  • Uphold high standards of personal behaviour
  • Build teamwork and collaborative skills
  • Foster a positive, caring attitude towards others
  • Understand their social and cultural traditions
  • Appreciate democratic processes and the law in England
  • Embrace and celebrate cultural diversity and richness
  • Experience and learn from other cultures
  • Celebrate each other’s achievements
  • Participate in a variety of educational visits

Through this approach, we aim to nurture well-rounded individuals who are socially responsible, morally aware, and culturally appreciative.
